Mid-oceanic ridges form at divergent plate boundaries where tectonic plates move apart allowing magma to rise and create the new oceanic crust. These ridges feature a central rift system which is the main site for crust formation.
Volcanic activity at mid-ocean ridges produces basaltic (basic) lava which is low in silica and flows easily creating the ridge's broad and flat features.
Mid-oceanic ridges are the Earth's longest mountain chain which stretches thousands of km underwater. They play an important role in shaping the ocean floor.
